This Spicy Beef Loaded Hummus is a perfect weeknight dinner, lunch or party dish. It's inspired by the hummus we had at Zahav in Philadelphia. Best served with pita or other flatbread, vegetables or just eaten with a spoon!

This recipe for Spicy Beef Loaded Hummus is a simple, easy, flavor-packed weeknight meal! It's versatile to use whatever you have on hand.
It is best made with homemade hummus (check out my recipe for Classic Creamy Hummus here), but works perfectly well with store-bought hummus. Just pick up your favorite brand in your favorite flavor!
The spicy beef in this recipe is deeply spiced and benefits from a more plain base of hummus, but if you're really partial to flavored hummus or it's all you have on hand, go for it!

The spicy beef mixture that we'll quickly saute up to go on top of the hummus is jam packed with flavor. The ingredient list looks long, but it's almost entirely made up of dried spices that you likely already have in the spice drawer!
What Spices do you need for Spicy Beef Loaded Hummus?
The main spices that impart the majority of the flavor are:
Cumin
Oregano
Coriander
Cayenne
Salt and Pepper
In addition, we'll need to add a pinch or a good shake of each of these spices to create that distinct Middle Eastern/Mediterranean flavor:
Parsley
Turmeric
Allspice
Smoked paprika
Chili powder

How to Make Spicy Beef Loaded Hummus:
We start to prepping the Classic Creamy Hummus, if you plan to use your own. Usually, we make a batch of hummus each week to have on hand for snacking. This recipe uses 1 - 1/2 cups of the hummus as a base. Any remaining can to stored separately for later snacking!
Next, start to make the spicy beef topping by sauteing down some onion and garlic in olive oil. Then, we'll brown the beef and cook down some diced tomato for texture.
Once the beef has browned fully, add in all those delicious spices. At this point, it will start to smell incredible! Feel free to adjust the spice levels according to your tastes, especially the cayenne.
Finally, add in some tomato paste and water to create a thick, saucy coated spicy beef and allow it to simmer for a few minutes.
How to Serve Spicy Beef Loaded Hummus:
To serve, spread your hummus in a shallow bowl and top it with the spicy beef mixture. A sprinkle of paprika, za'atar or fresh parsley is nice, but not required.
We love to eat this with warmed pita bread, lafta or other flatbread. I usually put out some carrots, cucumber or other veggies as well for dipping.
This dish makes an excellent appetizer or main dish when paired with a side salad or other vegetable sides!
How to Store Leftover Loaded Hummus:
The best way to store any leftover loaded hummus is to keep the hummus and the beef topping in separate containers in the fridge. Then you can reheat the beef before plating on top of the cool hummus. Separated, the hummus and beef will each last up to 1 week in the fridge. The beef mixture can also be stored for up to 1 month in the freezer.
If you have leftovers from your prepared dish though, feel free to just store it all together in an airtight container. It won't last as long this way, so make sure to eat it for a snack or lunch within 1-2 days!
